A Halloween Haiku Story
The First Candle of Halloween, a story about a young witch who is sent on a mission to find a special candle that will save Halloween.
Day 1:
I am a young witch.
through the dark night, I fly fast.
no one can catch me
Day 2:
I live in a house
with cobwebs and creaky stairs.
It smells like old books.
Day 3:
A Jack o’lantern
sits on my front porch. It smiles
but it has no light.
Day 4:
I look around me,
no lights to be found. Oh no!
Where are the candles?
Day 5:
In the darkness comes
the black cat who guards my street.
He meows at me.
Day 6:
“Werewolves have scattered,
Vampires have gone missing,
No Zombies rise up.
Day 7:
The Ghosts are on strike;
the First Candle was stolen.
It must be returned.”
Day 8:
I must fly away
with the full moon in the sky
to save Halloween.
Day 9:
I go to the patch
where the Jack o’lanterns dwell.
It is too quiet.
Day 10:
Poof! Whoosh! Boo! They rise,
the ghosts who guard the pumpkins.
They surround me now.
Day 11:
I clutch my broomstick
as my knees quiver and quake,
ready to fly high.
Day 12:
“The Candle is gone.
Without it, there is no flame.
Return it for us.”
Day 13:
Poof! They go again,
leaving me in the dark patch.
I can breathe now. Phew!
Day 14:
Oh, But where to start?
Maybe at the werewolves’ den,
I could find a clue.
Day 15:
I hop on my broom.
Zoom, zoom zoom! through the night sky,
off to find the den.
Day 16:
Pawprints everywhere.
In all directions they face . . .
that does not help me.
Day 17:
Wait! I see something!
A bag of candy corn and
a vampire cape.
Day 18:
Such odd things to find,
I grab them both and hold tight
as my broom bolts fast.
Day 19:
I dodge through the trees
toward the old cemetery,
the moon shining high.
Day 20:
In the pale moonlight,
the tall crypts gleam and glimmer
but no vampires.
Day 21:
I hover above,
my nose twitching for a clue.
Wait. What is that smell?
Day 22:
Zombie jellied brains!
and lots of colored paper.
What is going on?
Day 23:
My arms are tired,
but I still need to find it.
The ghosts’ first candle.
Day 24:
I fly to the field
that the zombies call their home.
Only it is still.
Day 25:
There in the middle,
a pile of hairbrushes
perfect for werewolves.
Day 26:
I smell candlewax
before I touch a hairbrush
. . . and maybe pumpkins?
Day 27:
Is this the last clue?
The midnight hour approaches
so I need to move.
Day 28:
Fly back to the patch,
the vampire cape full of
everything I found.
Day 29:
And to my surprise,
everyone is at the patch,
there for a party!
Day 30:
They cheer when they see
me and there in the center
is the First Candle!
Day 31:
The candle now lit,
the Jack O’lanterns glow bright.
Happy Halloween!
