Welcome back to Day 2 of December. I was catching up on one of my current webtoons today, and it was such a relaxing time. I started reading webtoons sometime in 2020 (93% positive that that’s correct) and fell completely in love with them. There are some super good artists and writers behind these webtoons.
The amount of giggling I do while reading webtoons far FAR outdoes the amount of giggling I’ve done while reading books. (is that the fairest contrast? Not at all. Most of the books I’ve read recently have not been giggle-type books) Anyway, I love them to bits. I absolutely love them.
So let’s talk a little more in detail about them.
Here are the apps I use to read webtoons:
Naver Webtoon (I have both the English and Korean versions app)
Like how I was 93% positive that I started reading webtoons in 2020, I am 93% positive that this was the first app I got on my phone. Some of my favorite current webtoons can be found on this app, and I look forward to Saturdays, Mondays, and Thursdays the most because of those webtoons. Of the three apps I use, Webtoon is nice because most webtoons are available for free if you wait for the releases.
They do have the option to pay for coins to gain access to future episodes early and unlock specific episodes. Such webtoons like the Save Me (BTS) webtoon are only available if you pay for coins or use their Daily Pass feature (once unlocked, you have 14 days to read). There are times where I’ve bought coins, and there have been times where I’ve just been patient and got to read them for free. Either way, this app has the broadest range of options for readers to access episodes.
Tapas
Not long after I downloaded Webtoon, I downloaded Tapas. I’m a big fan of romance webtoons (I’m a big of the romance genre in general), and between the three apps I use, I probably have subscribed to the most webtoons (they’re labeled as comics on Tapas and Tappytoon) on this particular app. Tapas has a relatively wide selection of comics, and they release new comics pretty frequently. So unlike Naver Webtoon, Tapas (and Tappytoon for the most part) have their episodes behind a points wall. They have four ways to get points:
- Buying points packages anywhere from a couple of bucks to $100.
- Completing one of their offers in exchange for points.
- Watching ads for 10 points per ad (you can only do 30 within an hour, sometimes less).
- Every Monday, you can open a fortune cookie for the chance to win up to 1000 points.
I have done all of these and mainly do options 1 and 4 right now. One thing that I really like about Tapas is that it is Gift Day on Saturdays. Every Saturday, a selection of comics and novels will appear, with 1 or more free episodes available. Some weeks I get really lucky and get episodes for several of the comics I subscribe to, and some weeks there aren’t any episodes for comics I’m interested in. Now, I’m not complaining about that, it’s a gift, and I’m grateful for it.
Tappytoon
Okay, the final app on this list. I don’t have quite so many comics that I read on this as I do on Webtoon or Tapas, but I still have some that I really enjoy. Aside from the current webtoon that I was reading earlier, I’ve been rereading one of my original favorites from Tappytoon. From what I’ve noticed, Tappytoon sits somewhere in the middle of Tapas and Naver Webtoon. It has a similar points wall as Tapas.
Still, it more recently has started doing a similar release structure as Naver Webtoon (where if you are patient, the episodes are released for free or you can pay for earlier access.) Now that’s only been done on a few comics that I’ve seen (and usually, I have also seen those same comics listed on Naver Webtoon). I have, in the past, completed the offers that are available for points or watched ads for points, but nowadays, I just pay. Regardless of how I got the points, I love when I get a completed webtoon fully unlocked because then I can reread it at my leisure, and I do.
So there you have it. On another day, I might talk about some of my current favorite webtoons to read, but for today I wanted to share the apps I recommend for the best webtoon experiences.
