I’m clearly in vacation mode because I’m up far later than usual on a weeknight. Ah, well, I can sleep in tomorrow, right? But enough about that. Over the years, Thanksgiving has become a break time for me. I understand how privileged and blessed I am to have a job that allows me to take Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday off (as well as having Saturday and Sunday off).
It is more than that for me. Except for a few years in my life, I’ve always spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with my family. Last year I even moved home to my parents’ house for a few weeks at Christmastime to have a half-vacation. I would work during the day but the commute time was much shorter, and I could then have more time and more fun with my family during the holidays.
It’s also so that I can take a step back from being an adult. My parents, my family as a whole are amazing. I am so blessed to have them as my parents and to be able to know that if I need to get away from my life or if something big happens that forces me to come home, that I have a place in their home to stay. I can escape some of the stress of being an adult and return home to refocus if needed.
I find that I’ve spent a good portion of my life finding places that I can go when I need to escape my life, no matter the reason. Books, movies, webtoons, my parents’ house are all included on that list. So tonight, I wanted to share the titles of some of the books, movies, and TV shows that I turn to when I want to escape.
Books
- The Mistborn Trilogy (Mistborn, The Well of Ascension, The Hero of Ages) by Brandon Sanderson
- Resolutions by Jenn Faulk
- Beauty by Robin McKinley
- Any of my Disney history books, especially the ones that focus on the Disney parks (I would need a much longer list to cover them all)
TV Shows
- Leverage
- BBC’s Pride and Prejudice
- M*A*S*H
- The Story of Minglan
- 1% of Something (2016 version)
Movies
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (I prefer watching the extended cuts, but I also enjoy the theatrically-released versions)
- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
- Stardust
- Little Women (1994)
- Twister
- Field of Dreams
