I’m currently writing this while my roommate and I watch Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I’m sitting off to the side with my computer facing away from my roommate so that the light doesn’t affect her viewing the movie. And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to say how grateful I am for streaming technology.
Of course, not to take away from the joy and pleasure that comes from seeing movies in the theater. Did I see Shang-Chi on the big screen? Yes, yes, I did. Did I love seeing it on the big screen? Absolutely I did. It’s been a while since I had that much of a good time at the movie theater.
Having the ability to stream media though has immense value as well.
This is not a new statement, as it is well-known how powerful (and how lucrative) streaming can be. There have been dozens, no doubt even hundreds of articles written about streaming services and the power of streaming media. Instead, I’m focusing this post on why I’m thankful for it.
I am thankful that streaming is global and that now shows and movies worldwide are available on various streaming platforms.
When I was young, I could not have imagined myself laughing, crying, and enjoying Kdramas, Cdramas, Jdramas, Thai lakorns, etc. I loved learning about the world and different cultures, but other than checking out books at the library (all in English), I didn’t have much experience with other cultures.
But now, I can get on my computer or my phone, open up an app like Viki or Netflix, and I get pulled into whatever show I watch next. That ease of accessibility, of being able to watch from the comfort of my own home, is such a privilege, and I’m grateful for it. While it’s not the only way, streaming helps keep my mind open to new ideas and possibilities. And in good times or bad, it’s great for when I want to watch something comforting with a happy ending.
What are some reasons why you like to stream shows?
