Michael Buble and Mariah Carey have been defrosted, and I am enjoying the near-endless supply of Hallmark Christmas movies because ’tis the season. Granted, those won’t be the only Christmas movies I watch this year. There’s Elf, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, The Man Who Saved Christmas, Mr. Krueger’s Christmas, and the classic claymation movies of the 70s (A Year Without a Santa Claus and Santa Claus is coming to Town being my top favorites).
Between you and me, I’ve already started watching the Hallmark Christmas movies. I am perfectly able to balance a Fright Fest movie marathon and the warm fuzzies of The Most Wonderful Time of the Year and Nine Lives of Christmas (starring Henry Winkler and Brandon Routh, respectively).
Hallmark and their formulas
Now, it’s no lie that Hallmark movies follow a pattern, a formula, so to speak. Usually, around the time when there are 15 minutes left in the movie, that’s when the big fallout happens. Sometimes earlier, but not often. Then when there are about 5 minutes left, that’s when the leads stop fighting and get back together, or he proposes or whatever they decide to do to fit the plot. And knowing that such a formula exists just eases up on the heart and nerves a bit.
Why do I love Hallmark movies, especially the Christmas ones? Well, the Christmas season has always been my favorite holiday season. It’s tied with Thanksgiving because food, gratitude, and shopping, which makes sense, I promise. I love the lights, the sounds, the decorations, the magic of the season. And Hallmark does a really good job at capturing all of that in their movies.
And even if the plots become rather similar, I still watch them. I absolutely have my favorites that I get to rewatch every year when they air on TV (thanks to DVR!). While I still have never made it through an entire Hallmark Christmas season, having watched every new release, I still spend many happy nights throughout the final months of the year watching and rewatching Christmas movies.
