When do I find the time to read? I’ve been talking about reading or how I plan to make 2022 my year of reading on this blog recently. And I do. I want to read more. I look at my books on my bookshelf (we won’t mention the ebooks), and I just want to let myself enjoy reading again. How I miss the days when I would procrastinate on assignments and spend hours in some comfortable spot as I finished reading whatever books I had currently checked out.
As technology has improved, I have gained more and more access to stories in a wide variety of formats. I’m talking movies, tv shows, webtoons, books, and not only those, but thanks to subtitles, I can enjoy movies and shows from other cultures. Just earlier today, I finished rewatching Jodhaa Akbar, which is one of my favorite Indian films. Just as a side plug, it was made in 2008, it’s currently available on Netflix; the leads are STUNNING; the cinematography is phenomenal, and the sets, costumes, and score are all perfection. Don’t be dissuaded by the running length (3 and half hours) because it is so, so good.
But the consumption of all of those stories takes time. Time which I am still figuring out how to manage better. It’s not even just about finding time to read because I can do that. I can make that a priority. It’s also about not feeling guilty for reading. Because I have lived my life the way I have, if I were to make a 180 change in this next week and spend time reading every day, I would feel mixtures of guilt that I could be more productive. I would also be questioning if I was reading the right book or not.
So is this the type of situation where I “take it day by day” and add more reading back into my life, or do I jump right into the deep end and enjoy all the books to my heart’s content? I really am torn because the logical solution is the first one. But how fun would it be just to let myself exist with my books. I will figure it out, and thankfully, in the meantime, my books will be patiently waiting for me. Though I may have to dust off their covers by the time I get around to them.
